Top Questions and Answers:

My child has their own insurance. Can they still utilize the Health & Counseling Center?

Yes, they can use the Health and Counseling Center! While not a Medicaid-certified provider, other students can use HCC services whatever their insurance. For non-Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), the student will need to pay out-of-pocket and then submit to their insurance for reimbursement per your policy. HCC administrative staff can work with the student to learn how to access their invoice to submit with their insurance plans for reimbursement. The HCC is working to expand it's billing capabilities to utilize other private insurances, but is not able to at this time. Updates surrounding HCC billing capabilities will be shared via the DU Family Experience as the school year progresses.

How can my student submit immunization records? What happens if they are turned in late?

Preferred means of submitting any medical/health records, including immunization records, is through student's online MyHealth portal. We can also accept immunization records by email hccinfo@du.edu (Please include the student's DU ID "87" number!), and recognize that email is not HIPAA (medical privacy law) compliant. These must be submitted by July 1, otherwise your student will have a registration hold placed on their account until the immunization record is complete.

Learn more about immunizations here.

My student has a doctor's appointment after the July 1 deadline and we can't submit immunization records by the deadline. What should we do?

Email hccinfo@du.edu for the next steps, explaining the specific situation/timeline, being sure to include student’s 87#. We can advise on best actions.

How will my student know when their immunization records have been processed?

Immunization records are currently being processed within 2-3 business days. In their MyHealth portal, they will see a compliancy section. If that section states they are "in compliance," that means their immunization records have been processed. If they have questions, they can call or email the HCC.

What is the Student Health Fee?

Similar to a technology fee or student activity fee, the Student Health Fee (previously the "Health & Counseling Fee (HCF)") is assessed to most DU students, but is not a charge for individual services or coverage. Rather, the Fee supports prevention education, wellness and crisis support services available to all students, such as 24/7 medical and mental health consultations, Health Promotion education events and supplies, and no-cost services as needed from CAPE (the Center for Advocacy, Prevention, & Empowerment). Students are charged $258 per quarter automatically on their bill. Learn more about the student health fee here.

Is there a pharmacist at the HCC? Can we get monthly shots set up there?

The HCC does not have its own pharmacist, but does keep some, most commonly prescribed medications on site. There are also several stores with a pharmacy within walking distance to campus. Students can receive their monthly allergy shots at the HCC – reach out now to see what information and forms are necessary.

I have an out-of-state student with a prescription. What's the recommendation for managing this prescription?

  • If it is a mental health prescription, off-campus providers can be found here.
  • If it is a medical prescription, students can schedule with our medical team and can fill most non-mental health prescriptions.
  • If it's an ADHD prescription, our psychiatry team cannot initiate ADHD medication through our office. We can maintain medication management for prior prescriptions and help with dosage or brand adjustments, but we cannot initiate.

If a student has an accident and is hospitalized - how can an out of state parent ensure they are engaged with care decisions without student having a health care proxy in place?

The hospital (or other off-campus provider) would handle their own proxy/release. DU Student Outreach & Support can help in these and other situations. It's also important to make sure student has current and complete Emergency Contact information on their "My Person Profile" in the My4D Portal.

We have summarized some key info and action items on our Preparing for Fall webpage (also linked on our homepage) and have a specific Parents & Families FAQ page.
