Special thanks to our Health and Counseling Center (HCC) for partnering with us on our webinar, "Supporting Your Student's Mental Health." We recognize this is a stressful time of year and learned more about how families can work with their student to support their mental health and important resources on campus. Read below for the recording and a summary of the webinar!

Webinar Highlights:

  1. Understanding College Mental Health
    • Stress is normal and can be helpful - in a healthy dose, stress can help to motivate actions, boost memory, and strengthen our immune system.
    • Too much unmanaged stress can be detrimental and it's important to work with students to help them learn how to identify useful stress and damaging stress.
      • Regularly checking in with your student and pointing out specific observations can help with you start to see signs of unhealthy stress in your student
    • End of Quarter Stress - It is normal for stress to be heightened as we conclude our quarter. Sharing resources on campus can be helpful to manage the heightened load!
  2. Effective Communication Strategies
    • Engaging in open and empathetic conversations with your student can make a significant difference. We discussed strategies for approaching sensitive topics, active listening, and validating your student's feelings without judgment.
    • Reach out and plan a time to speak - students are especially busy and sometimes planning to talk after they turn in a big assignment can feel more supportive.
  3. Encouraging Healthy Lifestyle Choices
    • Parents play a vital role in promoting balanced lifestyles. Encourage your student to prioritize sleep, nutrition, and regular physical activity. Additionally, fostering time management skills can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being. These are learned skills of an emerging adult and it's typical for there to be a transition period as they learn what works best for them.
  4. Resources and Support Systems
    • HCC Individual Therapy Sessions - ALL DU students, regardless of their insurance, receive 10 therapy sessions at the HCC with a co-pay of $20 per session.
    • Group Therapy Sessions - Free to all DU students and available for a range of supports.
    • Same-Day Appointments - M-F from 1-3pm
    • Crisis Services - no cost 24/7 counselor on call at 303-871-2205
    • All appointments can be made by students calling or through the MyHealth Portal

  5. Election Resources
    • Increased DU HCC (www.du.edu/hcc) Counseling drop-in options oSame-Day consultations at the HCC Ritchie Center:
      • Wednesday 11/6 and Thursday, 11/7, from 9am-5pm, and Friday 11/8 from 9am-3pm
      • BIPOC Support Drop-in Hours in the Student Inclusion and Belonging Suite (CCOM 1200) on Wednesday 11/6 and Thursday, 11/7, from 1-3pm
  6. Student Outreach and Support
    • Student Outreach and Support (SOS) Office acts as a connecting resource for students who are struggling and need additional support
    • Families, students, staff and faculty can fill out a referral to connect a student with a case manager. This case manager will:
      • help to connect the student to useful resources on campus
      • assist with communications and needs surrounding academics, food, and housing
    • This is a great starting point for family emergencies or sudden illnesses that impact your student
